Padre Win Streak Over

Larry Walker hit two homers, including a two-run shot in the 11th inning, as Colorado ended San Diego’s winning streak at six games with a 9-7 victory at Denver.

“I had no intention of hitting a home run,” Walker said of the game-winner. “With a guy on second, I can break my bat and bloop one in and we still win the game. Last night I was trying to hit one in the third deck, and I paid the price. Today I just tried to hit the ball hard, and it left the ballpark.”

Colorado turned a team-record six double plays. The major league record is seven, done four times and last accomplished by St. Louis in a 10-inning game against Pittsburgh on June 16, 1994.

Steve Reed (1-2) pitched the 11th for the victory, making Colorado 9-0 in extra-inning games at Coors Field.

Pittsburgh 9, St. Louis 3--Joe Randa, hitting for power since replacing the injured Kevin Elster as the No. 5 batter in the Pirate lineup, hit a two-run homer and a run-scoring triple at Pittsburgh.

Keith Osik also had a two-run single and a run-scoring triple for the Pirates. Winning pitcher Esteban Loaiza (5-2) gave up two runs and seven hits in eight innings.

New York 6, Florida 0--Armando Reynoso pitched a five-hitter for his first career shutout and the Mets tied a club record with five double plays at New York.

Reynoso (5-0) didn’t give up a hit until the fifth inning when Jim Eisenreich led off with a single.

Marlin starter Kevin Brown (5-4) gave up seven runs and 12 hits in seven innings.

Atlanta 9, Montreal 0--Denny Neagle gave up six singles for his second career shutout and Keith Lockhart, Javy Lopez and Andruw Jones all homered at Montreal.

Neagle (8-1), who also singled and drove in two runs, struck out seven and walked two. He was in trouble only once, when the Expos loaded the bases in the first inning, but escaped by retiring Chris Widger on a grounder.

Cincinnati 6, Houston 5--Lenny Harris and Pokey Reese replaced injured starters and had three hits each to lead the Reds at Cincinnati.

Harris hit a solo homer, scored two runs and drove in two as a replacement for Deion Sanders, who left the game in the second inning after twisting his left ankle. Sanders is listed as day-to-day.

Reese had two singles and a double while filling in at shortstop for Barry Larkin, who is sidelined with a neck injury.

Philadelphia 9, Chicago 8--Mike Lieberthal hit a three-run homer in the ninth and Scott Rolen singled in the winning run in the 10th at Philadelphia as the Phillies ended a losing streak at six games.

Ken Ryan (1-0) the sixth Phillie pitcher, got three outs for the victory. Dave Hansen hit his first home run in nearly two years and tied his career high with four runs batted in.

Montreal right fielder Vladimir Guerrero was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a pulled right hamstring following the Expos’ loss to Atlanta. The Expos may also be without center fielder Rondell White for an undetermined period. White pulled his left hamstring making a diving catch Wednesday. . . Colorado pitcher Jamey Wright, on the disabled list since May 15 because of an inflamed collarbone, will be activated and is scheduled to start Saturday against Florida. John Burke, originally set to pitch Saturday, will be moved to Sunday, and Bobby Jones will be relegated to the bullpen.
