Underwood Puts Saugus Over Top, 1-0

Josh Underwood doubled and scored on a two-out single by Brad Ritter in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Saugus a 1-0 victory over Studio City North in a District 20 American Legion baseball game Thursday at Saugus High.

Underwood (1-1) pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 for Saugus (4-5).

Evan Hernandez allowed two hits over eight innings, striking out 12 for Studio City North (4-3).

North Hollywood West 7, Studio City South 2--Arnold Vasquez hit a grand slam in a District 20 game at North Hollywood High.

It was the second home run of the season for Vasquez, who was also hit by a pitch and walked and had a stolen base.

North Hollywood West (6-3) has 11 home runs in nine games.

Jerrit Redlich added two hits, two runs and a stolen base and starter Jose Figueroa pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits with five strikeouts.

Woodland Hills East 9, Valley South 1--John Meier (3-0) allowed one run on five hits and struck out two in six innings for Woodland Hills East in a District 20 game at Taft High.

Darnell Westbrook paced the offense for Woodland Hills East (7-2) by going four for four with two doubles and an RBI.

Jeff Spector added two hits and three RBIs. Mitch Spector and Travis Rutter each doubled and drove in a run.

Valley North 18, Granada Hills East 6--Valley North (6-1) scored 11 runs in the seventh on eight hits, three walks, three errors and a hit batter to turn a District 20 game into a rout at Kennedy High.

Frank Dipoma had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, and Matt Fisher added two doubles, a triple and three RBIs for Valley North, which led, 7-6, entering the seventh.

Mike Kunes had a home run, a single, two RBIs and scored three runs for Valley North. Joe Tillman added two hits and three RBIs, and Mike Berger had two hits and two RBIs.

Newbury Park 9, Simi Valley 5--Danny Greene and Ryan Ayers each had three hits for Newbury Park (5-4) in a District 16 game at Newbury Park.

Jake Farrel added two hits and three RBIs and Anthony Foli hit a solo home run for Newbury Park, which scored in every inning.

Dan Block (2-0) pitched four innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three.

Woodland Hills West 14, North Hollywood East 7--Conor Jackson had six RBIs on two home runs and a double for Woodland Hills West in a District 20 game at Harvard-Westlake.

Kurt Birkins and Mike Cohn each drove in two runs for North Hollywood East.

Sunland-Tujunga 8, San Fernando 4--Wesley Willard had two hits and an RBI for Sunland Tujunga (6-2) and Paul Kinzer pitched a three-hitter in the District 20 game at San Fernando High.

Antonio Mascorro of San Fernando (1-7) hit a two-run home run in the fifth to narrow his team’s deficit to 6-4, but Sunland-Tujunga countered with two runs in the seventh.

Newhall Saugus 6, Valencia 3--Bob Patruch had three hits, including two solo home runs, and Jeremy Shields (2-1) allowed four hits in six innings, striking out 10 for Newhall Saugus (6-3) in a District 20 game at Canyon High.
