Finley’s 3 Homers Power Padres, 11-6

Steve Finley homered three times and Wally Joyner added two homers as the San Diego Padres defeated the San Francisco Giants, 11-6, Monday night.

Jim Bruske got his major league win a few hours after being promoted from the minors, allowing three hits in five scoreless innings of relief.

Finley hit solo homers in the first and seventh innings and added a two-run shot--his 11th of the season--in the ninth.

Finley, who also hit three homers on May 19 at Cincinnati, tied a club-record also shared by Nate Colbert, who hit three homers in a game in 1972. It was the fifth multihomer game of Finley’s career.

Joyner hit a three-run homer in the first and led off the sixth with his eighth homer of the season.

Tony Gwynn added an RBI double and Archi Cianfrocco drove in two runs for the Padres, who have won 12 of their last 13 against the Giants. Gwynn went three for six to raise his average to .395.

Finley had four hits and Ken Caminiti added three as the Padres had a season-high 20 hits.

Bruske (1-0), whose contract was purchased from Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League earlier in the day, allowed three hits and struck out three.

Bruske came in with one out and two runners on in the second and the Padres trailing 6-4. He walked the first batter he faced, but got Bill Mueller to hit into a double play to end that threat and then retired the next 11 batters.

Bruske, who made 20 relief appearances for the Dodgers in 1995 and 1996, also doubled in his first major league at-bat.

Trevor Hoffman got the final out, striking out J.T. Snow with the bases loaded. Hoffman got his 13th save and became the Padres’ career leader with 109, surpassing Rollie Fingers.

Stan Javier hit a two-run homer, Damon Berryhill had a two-run double and Jeff Kent added a two-run single for the Giants. Javier had four hits, including a double.

After each team scored four runs in the first, the Padres took a 5-4 lead in the second on a bases-loaded walk by Cianfrocco. But the Giants regained the lead in their half of the inning on Kent’s bases-loaded single.
