Fullerton’s Joon Lee Leads California State Open Golf

Joon Lee of Fullerton shot a five-under-par 67 Wednesday for a two-round total of 11-under 133 and a one-shot lead in the California State Open golf tournament at Indian Wells Country Club and Resort.

Lee graduated from Sunny Hills High and played collegiate golf at USC.

Steve Jurgensen of Newport Beach, the first-round leader, is second after a two-under 70. John Gilles of Laguna Beach shares fourth place with three others at 136. Jason Gore of Valencia is at 138, the low amateur midway through the tournament.

Sue Ewart of Seal Beach shot a 73 in the championship flight to lead by one shot after the first round of the Long Beach Women’s City Championship at El Dorado Golf Course. Dianne Yelovich of Huntington Beach shot a 75. In A Flight, Pat Hill of Westminster and Jill Ross of Buena Park share the lead at 78.

Doug Deats, baseball coach at Costa Mesa High, has resigned because of personal reasons, Athletic Director Jerry Howell said Wednesday.

Deats was 42-53 in four seasons with the Mustangs, who finished 7-17 in 1997 and missed the playoffs after qualifying the previous two seasons.

Howell also announced the resignation of softball Coach Pacita Vasquez and girls’ water polo Coach Crystal Whitmore.

The Aliso Niguel boys’ basketball team takes on Los Angeles Loyola and Costa Mesa meets Valencia at 9 a.m. today in the opening games of the Converse South County Shootout at Trabuco Hills High.

Fifteen county teams, including Woodbridge, the Southern Section Division II-AA champion, are among the 24 teams that will compete in the pool-play format today, Friday and Saturday. The championship game begins at 7:40 p.m. Saturday. Simultaneous play in the school’s main and auxiliary gym begins at 9 a.m. each day. Admission is $3 per day for adults, $1 for children ages 10-13. The Angels have awarded six Southland cities with grants and donations to aid Little League programs. The cities are Westminster, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Cypress, Riverside and La Habra.

The program, called Rookie Ball, is designed to help boys and girls ages 6-13 learn the game. The free program runs for four weeks and aims to improve physical and academic skills and character of the participants.

The Angels will auction off commemorative jerseys and caps worn by the team during the first interleague game at Anaheim Stadium. The jerseys will be worn only once, during the Angels’ game with the Dodgers July 2, and autographed by Angel players and coaches after the game.

Sealed bids will be accepted by mail today through July 9. The following information is required for each bid: name, address, phone (day and evening), name of player or coach bid is intended for and the amount of the bid.

Female athletes are invited to apply for financial assistance from Females Overall Committed to Unity in Sports (FOCUS), a Seal Beach-based tax-exempt charity.

A female athlete between ages 12 and 17 will serve as a figurehead in FOCUS’s campaign to raise awareness and money to support girls’ athletic programs in schools and female athletes.

Those interested may apply by sending a one-page letter of introduction that includes reasons why financial help is needed. The application deadline is July 30.

Leslie Williams, a freshman shortstop and catcher for the Pacific Christian softball team, has been selected All-American first-team by the National Christian College Athletic Assn. She hit .485 and set single-season school records for hits (48), extra-base hits (19) and runs batted in (27).

Junior second baseman Kristin Phillips was an NCCAA scholastic All-American. She has a 3.8 grade-point average.

The Royals have signed Kimberly Myers, an infielder from Monte Vista Christian High in Watsonville, Amanda Boswell, an infielder/pitcher from Sierra College in Rocklin, and Kellie Harrison, an infielder/pitcher from Culver City High.

The boys’ under-14 team from Surf City Volleyball Club of Huntington Beach earned the top seeding at next month’s Junior Olympics by winning its age-group title last weekend at the Southern California Volleyball Assn. finals.

Based at Golden West College, Surf City battled through the losers’ bracket of the 25-team tournament and defeated the South Coast Volleyball Club of Manhattan Beach in the championship match at Marina High.

The Junior Olympics will be held July 4-8 in Denver.
