A minor fire caused by a malfunctioning propane barbecue left an elderly disabled man with leg burns and a woman with a broken left arm Thursday evening, authorities said.

The fire occurred on the patio of a Margarita Avenue mobile home near Camarillo Springs Golf Course.

When flames began shooting out the side of the barbecue and threatened the mobile home, an unidentified 88-year-old man on a motorized cart attempted to douse the flames with a garden hose, said Capt. John Alford of the Ventura County Fire Department.

The man, whom officials did not identify, suffered first- and second-degree burns to his legs when he got too close to the flames, Alford said.

An unidentified 68-year-old woman at the residence broke her left arm during the confusion.

Both were treated at St John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital.

The mobile home sustained only superficial damage, Alford said.
