‘Gospel Day’ Debuts at Universal CityWalk

More than two dozen choirs, soloists and musicians will perform at Universal CityWalk on Sunday in what promoters are calling “Southern California’s first Gospel Day.”

Performers from across the San Fernando Valley will be on stage in Cinema Plaza from noon to 9 p.m. The event will feature a range of musical acts, from hip-hop performers K.T. and Focus to saxophone soloist Lawrence Tamez.

Comedian and former Miss Black America Lydia Garrett also is scheduled to perform. Two Valley-based performers of note also will appear: vocalist Mandie Pinto and the 40-member choir Circle of Faith.

Pinto, an 18-year-old Encino resident, began recording at age 14 and now arranges, composes and teaches voice in addition to singing professionally. She has performed at numerous Southern California churches, including the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove.

Circle of Faith, based at First Baptist Church of North Hollywood, will celebrate its 50th anniversary this February. Stafford Floyd, a keyboardist and trombonist who directs the choir, has played with artists such as Anita Baker, Sister Sledge and Immature.
