Mammoth Lakes Hit by 4.0 Quake

Share

Mammoth Lakes had its fifth volcanic earthquake Thursday in the moderate 4 magnitude range since Nov. 22, but the daily total, including very small quakes, dropped below 200 for the first time in several days, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The 4.0 quake occurred at 1:38 p.m. and was centered just a mile southeast of the Eastern Sierra town. No damage or injuries were reported.

The survey’s monitors noted that they have measured two inches of ground uplift since last May in an area east of Mammoth Lakes extending a distance of 4.6 miles. Uplift is a possible precursor of an eruption, but usually quite a bit more must occur before one takes place.

The strongest quakes in the present six-month quake swarm occurred Nov. 22 and Nov. 30. Both were magnitude 4.8, and the first caused some minor breakage in the town.
