Whitaker Will Try to Ring Up Another KO

Heavyweight Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills will put his 11-0 record on the line in an eight-round bout against Eddie Gonzalez of San Antonio on Friday in North Lake, Ill.

Whitaker, 26, has knocked out all of his opponents in under two rounds since turning pro in July of 1996. Gonzalez is 26-18-1 with 15 knockouts.

The fight is on the undercard of a 10-round lightweight main event between Goyo Vargas and Andre Cray.

GOLF

Back in pack: Bob Burns, who attended Cal State Northridge and Kennedy High, fired a third-round 71 and is tied for 44th place at 211 in the $500,000 PGA Tour qualifying tournament at Grenelefe Resort in Haines City, Fla.

Burns is 14 shots behind leader Scott Verplank, who is at 66-64-67--197 and leading Blaine McCallister, 67-70-68--205, by eight shots at the midway point of the 108-hole tournament.

David Berganio of Pacoima and Alemany High is at 213 after a 72, with Chris Zambri of Camarillo, who shot 71, and Michael Walton from Pepperdine, who shot 70, in a tie at 215.

John Johnson of Ventura shot 76 and is at 222, with Charlie Wi of Westlake Village at 224 after a 73 and Jason Gore of Valencia at 227 after a 74.

The low 35 players and ties will earn PGA Tour cards, with the next 70 fully exempt on the Nike Tour. The remainder will will receive conditional Nike Tour status.

One-upmanship: Jody Duclos of Moorpark was defeated by Caryn Wilson of Rancho Mirage on Friday in the quarterfinals of the California Women’s Amateur Golf Championships at Quail Lodge Golf Course in Carmel Valley.

Wilson defeated Duclos, one up, to advance to a semifinal match today against defending champion Dorothy Delasin of Daly City.

HONORS

Chosen two: Edniesha Curry and Oswaldo Servin were selected Cal State Northridge athletes of the month for November in a vote of the school’s student-athlete congress.

Curry, a freshman basketball player from Palmdale High, averaged 17.5 points, 4.3 assists and 4.0 steals. She made 12 three-point baskets and averaged 4.3 rebounds.

Servin, a senior, finished 17th out of 60 runners in the Big Sky Conference cross-country championships Nov. 1 at Cal State Sacramento, and placed 41st in a field of 145 in the NCAA Division I Western Regional in Tucson, Ariz.
