Edison Beats Gahr to Win Tournament

Christina Patterson scored 14 points to lead Edison to the championship of the Estancia girls’ basketball tournament with a 45-37 victory over Cerritos Gahr Friday night.

Melanie Cherney, named to the all-tournament team, scored 10 points for Edison (6-0). The Chargers’ Michelle Zlystra was also named to the all-tournament team.

Tammy Johnson led visiting Gahr (6-2) with a game-high 19 points.

In the Brea Olinda tournament:

Mission Viejo 59, Ontario 22--Geneva Kelly scored 19 points in a pool-play victory for Mission Viejo (2-2). Kristin Engstrom added 16 points for the Diablos.

During the third quarter, Ontario (0-4) played with six players on the court until the referee noticed and called a technical foul. Despite having an extra player for almost four minutes, Ontario still managed only two points in the quarter.

In the Carson City tournament:

Marina 49, Carson City (Nev.) Carson 37--Marina’s Karyn Fierst led all scorers with 14 points in the Vikings’ semifinal victory.

Natalie Nakase added 12 points and eight assists for the Vikings (4-1), which will play Reno Wooster in the championship game at 5 p.m. today.

In the Santa Ana Valley tournament:

Rosary 63, Santa Ana Valley 35--Sarah Belavic scored eight points and added seven assists for the Royals (6-1). Maggie Barnet led the team with 16 points, and Romina Bollini added 14 points and six rebounds. Jenise Karcher scored 11 points and had three assists and four rebounds. Lisa Sanchez led Santa Ana Valley with 13 points, including three three-point goals, a game high.

In the South Coast Classic:

No. 4 Capistrano Valley 62, Villa Park 44--Natasha Combs led Capistrano Valley with 19 points, and Mary Anderson added 16 with eight steals. Sarina Kissel grabbed a team-high 16 rebounds and scored 12 points for Capistrano Valley (4-0). Bianca Larson led Villa Park (4-2) with 11 points. Capistrano Valley will play Santa Margarita at 7:30 p.m. at University High for the championship.

Santa Margarita 61, Vista 46--Venessa Ferragamo scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Santa Margarita (3-2). Molly Malone added 14 points for the Eagles.

In the University tournament:

Trabuco Hills 62, Jurupa Valley 23--Jennifer Rakowitz scored 20 points, including five three-pointers, and Emily Deeley added 18 for Trabuco Hills (4-1).
