Boys

A listing of all boys’ basketball tournaments opening this week that include county teams:

Troy Tournament

* Site: Troy HS

* Dates: Pool play games, today through Dec. 19; Championship, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

* County teams entered: Troy, Pacifica, Sunny Hills, Whittier Christian, Corona del Mar.

* 1996 champion: Troy, a 55-36 winner over Cypress.

* Outlook: This 10-team tournament goes head to head with Sonora’s, also Troy’s biggest competitor in the Freeway League. La Puente Bishop Amat is also included in this draw.

Sonora Cage Classic

* Site: Sonora HS

* Dates: Pool play games, today through Dec. 19; Championship, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m.

* County teams entered: Santa Ana Valley, Villa Park, La Habra, Valencia, Sonora, Westminster, El Toro, Cypress, Tustin, Rancho Alamitos.

* 1996 champion: Sonora, a 67-57 winner over Tustin.

* Outlook: Last year, fourth-ranked Sonora upset No. 2 Woodbridge, which was led by Chris Burgess, now at Duke. This year Sonora should be the favorite.

Irvine World News

Tournament

* Site: Irvine HS, University HS, Woodbridge HS and Concordia University

* Dates: Bracketed games, Dec. 16, 17 and 19; Championship, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m.

* County teams entered: Irvine, Woodbridge, University, Kennedy, Capistrano Valley, Fountain Valley, Estancia, Los Amigos, Huntington Beach, Dana Hills.

* 1996 champion: Woodbridge, a 58-50 winner over Capistrano Valley.

* Outlook: University is top-seeded, followed by Estancia and Dana Hills.

Gary Raya Co-ed Classic

* Site: El Dorado and Esperanza HS

* Dates: Pool play games, today through Dec. 19; Championship, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

* County teams entered: El Dorado, Aliso Niguel, Esperanza.

* 1996 champion: El Dorado, a 53-48 winner over Aliso Niguel.

* Outlook: The county teams will be challenged by out-of-county squads Canyon Country Canyon, Corona, Downey, Pomona Ganesha, and McNally from Edmonton, Alberta.

Converse Christmas

Classic

* Site: Trabuco Hills HS

* Dates: Dec 18-23, Championship, Dec. 23 at 7:30 p.m.

* County teams entered: Trabuco Hills, Century, Laguna Hills, Costa Mesa.

* 1996 champion: Long Beach Poly, a 77-62 winner over Fontana Miller.

* Outlook: This eighth annual tournament features 12 out-of-county teams, including Los Angeles Verbum Dei and Bakersfield Stockdale.
