MICHELLE BASANDA

Aliso Niguel, Jr.

Basanda capped an impressive season with a 12th-place finish at the state Division I finals (18:51). She also finished seventh at the Southern Section finals (18:43), third at the Dana Hills Invitational and the Laguna Hills Invitational and second at the Woodbridge Invitational.

APRIL LOPEZ

Mission Viejo, So.

Lopez helped the Diablos to a sixth-place finish at the state Division II finals with an eighth-place finish (18:52). A week earlier, she was fifth at the Southern Section finals (19:19). Earlier in the season, Lopez was fourth in the Division I-II team sweepstakes at Mt. San Antonio College.

ALICIA McFALL

Newport Harbor, Jr.

McFall won the Sea View League title and was first in her heat at the Southern Section Division III prelims before slipping to a sixth-place finish at the finals (19:05). She finished 21st at the state finals (19:26). McFall won at the Laguna Hills Invitational and was third at Woodbridge.

MARY MOORE

Woodbridge, Sr.

Moore started off strong, winning the Woodbridge Invitational and finishing second at the Dana Hills and Laguna Hills invitationals. She wrapped up her season with a third-place finish at the section finals (19:08) and a fifth-place finish at the state Division II finals (18:40).

DANI ROPE

Santa Margarita, Sr.

Rope maintained a consistent performance level throughout the season, finishing seventh at the state finals (18:46) and second at the Southern Section finals (18:45). She also had a fourth-place finish in the Woodbridge Invitational and a second-place finish in the Sea View League finals.

JILL SANTIBANEZ

Katella, Sr.

Santibanez was the only county runner to win an individual section title, winning the Division II race in 18:33. She also won her second consecutive Empire League title and her race at the Bronco Invitational. Like last year, she finished 10th at the state finals (18:57).

PAM SMITH

Esperanza, Jr.

Smith helped lead the Aztecs to a second-place finish in the state Division I finals, coming in 19th (18:59) place. She also finished eighth in the Southern Section finals. Earlier in the season, she won the Sunset League title and was undefeated in league dual meets.

GEORGE VARVAS

Coach of the Year

Woodbridge

In his 16th year as head coach, Varvas led the Warriors to their first Southern Section and state titles, turning around a team that finished 0-5 in 1994 and ’95. This season, the Warriors were fourth in the Sea View League with a 3-2 record.

Finished 13th at state Division II finals (19:13).

Jessica Dahlberg, El Modena, Sr.

Was fifth at Southern Section Division III finals (19:03).

Jamie DeNoewer, Costa Mesa, Jr.

Third at state (18:54) and section (19:02) Division IV finals.

Heather Garritson, Buena Park, Sr.

Finished third at the section Division III finals (19:00).

Melissa Haddy, Dana Hills, Fr.

Finished 11th at the section Division I finals (18:55).

Jessica Howard, University, So.

Was 10th at the section Division I finals (18:53).

Valarie Morris, Irvine, So.

Ninth in Division I-II team sweepstakes race (18:58).
