Ian Sullivan of La Canada High made six of his team’s nine three-point baskets in regulation against Pasadena Marshall in the champ-ionship game of the La Canada/St. Francis/Bell-Jeff tournament Tuesday night, but he couldn’t get a shot in overtime.

Instead, two other La Canada players missed three three-point attempts in overtime and the Spartans lost, 70-68.

“They did a box-and-one [defense] on us and Ian couldn’t get free of his man,” La Canada Coach Tom Hofman said. “Other people needed to step up and they didn’t. We can’t depend on Ian in every situation.”

The Spartans (9-3) suffered a blow when center Matt Moore, the tournament’s co-most valuable player, was knocked dizzy when he took a hit to his head in the second quarter.

Although Moore finished with a game-high 21 points, the 6-foot-7, 240-pound senior clearly wasn’t himself, managing just six rebounds in limited action.

“That really affected our rebounding [in the second half],” Hofman said.

La Canada took a 66-63 lead in overtime on a free throw by David Hudes with 2:17 remaining.

But Marshall made all four of its free throws and a three-pointer by Davarian Machey to claim a 70-66 lead with two seconds left.

Moore received a length-of-the-court pass and dunked uncontested at the buzzer.

Only starters scored for Marshall, which was led by Machey’s 20 points and Miles Alexander’s 19.

La Canada led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, but Marshall kept chipping away.

With the Spartans leading, 56-48, with five minutes remaining in regulation, Marshall used a 13-3 run to take a 61-59 lead with 40 seconds left.

Two free throws by Sullivan tied the game with 14 seconds left.
