Merced’s Droughns an All-American

No member of an Orange County team made the J.C. Grid-Wire All-American first team. But Merced College’s Reuben Droughns, who was a standout at Anaheim High, did.

Kody Miller, a defensive back from Santa Ana, made second team. Miller also was the Mission Conference Central Division defensive player of the year.

Earning honorable mention were running back Terell Robinson (Santa Ana), offensive lineman Matt Welch (Santa Ana) and kicker Brett Thompson (Saddleback).

Welch and Fullerton linebacker Jeff Wucinich made the Scholar Athlete All-American first team.

Santa Ana finished in the final J.C. Grid-Wire national rankings, which had Mt. San Antonio on top and San Francisco second.

Women’s basketball: The 16-team Fullerton tournament, which features four teams from the Orange Empire Conference, starts Saturday.

Cypress plays Los Angeles Valley at 9:30 a.m. in the first game. In other games involving conference teams: Los Angeles Harbor plays Riverside at 11:15 a.m., Irvine Valley and El Camino meet at 4:30 p.m. and Fullerton vs. Santa Monica follows at 6:15 p.m.

The tournament continues Sunday and Monday and the title game is Dec. 30 at 4 p.m.

Men’s basketball: The Santa Ana tournament starts Saturday, with Los Angeles Harbor playing Rio Hondo at 2 p.m.

Also in the first round: Mt. San Antonio plays Saddleback at 4 p.m., Pasadena and Palomar are at 6 p.m. and Santa Ana takes on Whatcom (Wash.) at 8 p.m.

The semifinals are at 6 and 8 p.m. Sunday and the title game begins at 7 p.m. Monday.

Moving on: Teri Goolsby, golfer for the Cypress team that won the state title last fall, has made an oral commitment to attend Florida Southern.

Goolsby, from Pacifica High, won the individual title at the Southern California championship.
