Chaminade Takes Control With Victory in Honolulu

Matt Chirba, Scott Borchart and Cayce Cook each scored 10 points, and Chaminade High controlled the boards against Sonoma Valley en route to a 56-31 victory in the opening round of the St. Louis tournament in Honolulu on Friday.

Chaminade (7-1), ranked No. 2 in The Times’ regional poll, outrebounded Sonoma Valley, 35-14. The Northern California team made just one of nine field-goal attempts in the first quarter, during which the Eagles assumed a 17-2 lead.

Chaminade plays Iolani of Hawaii in a quarterfinal today.

In other boys’ games:

North Hollywood 65, Garfield 64--Keron Wilkerson scored 30 points for the Huskies in a first-round game of the Eagle Rock tournament.

Dejon Lee added 13 points for North Hollywood (7-5). Alex Romero had 25 for Garfield.

Taft 62, Bravo Medical 36--Amir Bar-Netzer had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Harold Shevlin had 17 points for Taft (5-2) in the opening round of the Eagle Rock tournament.

Crescenta Valley 57, San Francisco Lowell 56--Bill Mulvoy took a pass from Christ Shakhmalian and made a layup with three seconds remaining, and the Falcons (7-4) upset previously unbeaten Lowell (7-1) in a first-round game at the Anaheim Canyon tournament.

Kean Mallory made seven of 10 field-goal attempts, including four of six three-point shots, and had 18 points for Crescenta Valley.

Lancaster 60, Brethren Christian 57--Andrew Austin led all scorers with 20 points to spark the Eagles (3-7) in a first-round game at the Century tournament.

Dan Trez had 19 points for the Warriors.

Oak Park 68, Rio Mesa 58--Greg Jones scored 11 of his 28 points in the second quarter and Zack Smith added 14 points for Oak Park (4-4) and the Eagles won a first-round game in the Santa Paula tournament.

Oxnard 70, Kilpatrick 35--Damian Tafoya scored nine of his 11 points in the first quarter and the Yellowjackets (5-3) outscored the Mustangs, 20-1, in the last six minutes of the period in the first round of the Santa Paula tournament.

Rick Hernandez led Oxnard with 16 points, and Jacob Rogers had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Keoki Williams had 13 points for Kilpatrick (2-5).

Moorpark 49, Santa Monica 41--Keith Donahue scored 29 points, including 12 on three-point shots, and he made nine of 11 free throws as the Musketeers (9-3) won in pool play in the Santa Barbara tournament.

Donahue scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, when Moorpark outscored Santa Monica, 20-9. He also grabbed eight rebounds and had five steals. Kevin Lawrence added 10 points and pulled down 18 rebounds for Moorpark, which has won four consecutive games.

Thousand Oaks 70, Saugus 64--Jason Dixon scored 18 points and Tim Chevalier and Bas Van Rhee added 14 apiece for the Lancers (4-6) in pool play at the Santa Barbara tournament.

Hueneme 68, Santiago 57--Robert Collins had a game-high 22 points for Hueneme in the opening round of the Santa Paula tournament. Matt Ramirez had 14 points for Hueneme (4-3).

Channel Islands 76, El Modena 69--Junior guard Dwight Sattiewhite scored 28 points for the Raiders (8-1) in a Santa Barbara tournament pool-play game.

Matt Garcia scored 24 points for the Vanguards (5-4).

Montclair 65, Hoover 64--Martik Gukasyan missed a 12-foot shot with two seconds remaining, and the Tornadoes (8-3) let a six-point halftime lead slip away in a pool-play game at the Estancia tournament.

Mark Hull had 24 points for Hoover.

Camarillo 66 Palmdale 62--Jeff Stuteville had 23 points for the Scorpions (4-4) in a first-round game at the Mt. Carmel tournament in San Diego.

GIRLS

Valencia 57, Monrovia 42--Tiffany Morgan came off the bench for 16 points, six rebounds and five steals for the Vikings (7-3) in a pool-play game at the Glendora tournament.

Crescenta Valley 83, Westlake 45--Tara Gregory had 15 points, five steals and five assists, and Sinnamonn Garrett added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Falcons (7-1) in a first-round game at the Thousand Oaks tournament.
