A young male driver and his elderly female passenger were killed Monday on the Long Beach Freeway shortly before noon when their car crashed into a disabled truck near an offramp in Vernon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The car driven by the man was traveling in the fast lane when it suddenly swerved toward the offramp.

“He must have remembered he needed to get off the freeway at Bandini [Boulevard] and he darted across all the lanes of traffic,” said CHP Officer Louis Gutierrez. The car hit the tractor-trailer and became wedged beneath the trailer portion of the truck.
