As we approach the end of the century, a new and overwhelming dimension has invaded the life of the literary toiler. Writers who understand how to use the complicated Internet technology are earning more money than ever before, and writers who ignore this new world are finding themselves left behind.

Storytelling by Jim Woodard will be featured at the Fourth of July celebration at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. At 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Friday, Woodard will share stories about a little-known incident in the life of Abraham Lincoln, and the birth of the American flag in 1775. Ella the Storyteller will entertain youngsters from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday during the continuing drive to collect cash donations and 10,000 books to benefit Ventura County libraries. The day’s activities, sponsored by B. Dalton Booksellers and the Ventura Library Services Agency, will be held at The Oaks mall, 222 W. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks.

Mary Ann Fraser, author-illustrator of more than 50 books for children will participate in the library drive at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the mall’s center court.

The literary journal Verve is soliciting material for its fall ’97 issue. Send poetry and short fiction (up to 1,000 words) expressing the theme “Family Ties” to Verve, P.O. Box 3205, Simi Valley, CA 93093. Send a SASE for guidelines. The deadline is Aug. 1.

Although women account for 46% of the work force in the United States, only an estimated 3% to 5% make it to the top of their fields. Journalist Barbara Hutmacher MacLean addresses the issue in her book “I Can’t Do What? Voices of Pathfinding Women” recently published by Pathfinder Publishing of Ventura.
