Cowsill Throws No-Hitter

Ryan Cowsill pitched his second no-hitter of the season and John Puccinelli had a grand slam and two doubles to lead Van Nuys East (16-3) to a 14-1 victory over Van Nuys South in a District 20 American Legion baseball game Saturday at Notre Dame High.

Cowsill (4-0) struck out six and walked one, which led to the only run he allowed in the fifth inning.

In other District 20 games:

Antelope Valley South 17-24, Quartz Hill South 0-9--Anthony Barton hit two home runs and had six runs batted in and brother Chris Barton went three for six with five RBIs for Antelope Valley South (14-7) in the second game of a doubleheader sweep at Antelope Valley College.

Anthony Barton, who has nine home runs this season, also hit a pair of two-run homers in the first game.

Woodland Hills East 7, Woodland Hills West 6--Pinch-runner Jon Meier scored the winning run for Woodland Hills East (17-5) on Darnell Westbrook’s fielder’s choice with one out in the top of the seventh inning at El Camino Real High.

Agoura Oaks 7, West Hills 2--Jeff Smith had two hits, including a double, and Manny Mosqueda hit his eighth home run in the fifth inning to lead Agoura Oaks (1-21) at Oak Park High.

Van Nuys West 12, North Hollywood East 2--Angel Barajas (2-2) pitched a six-hitter and had three hits and four RBIs to lead Van Nuys West (8-13).

Barajas hit a three-run home run, struck out four, walked two, hit a batter and allowed one earned run.

Newhall Saugus 9, Saugus 5--Chris Coash was two for three and drove in two runs and Steve Lombardi had a three-run home run for Newhall Saugus at Canyon High.

Granada Hills East 10, Mission Hills 0--Matt Woodward drove in three runs and Dave Hernandez had two hits and two RBI for Granada Hills East (14-7) at Kennedy High.

In District 16 games:

Ojai 6-3, Royal 5-10--Jason Bowers went three for three for Royal in the second game at Royal High.

Scott Rice highlighted an eight-run fifth inning with a three-run home run to break a 2-2 tie. Royal is 13-3.

Moorpark 10-3, Simi Valley 3-8--Wes Rasmussen of Moorpark was three for four and Paz Olson-Pacheco scattered six hits while going the distance to improve to 5-0 for Moorpark (8-10-1) in the first game.
