Community Groups May Get Funds

Community groups might get a financial boost today as the City Council considers dividing extra funds among 17 local organizations and the Anaheim Museum.
When the council adopted the city’s 1997-98 budget last month, $132,809 was earmarked for nonprofit groups. But under the plan, available funding could increase to as much as $200,000 if the money goes to groups providing services to youth, the elderly and disadvantaged families.
Recipients recommended by the city’s Community Services Board for additions funding include the Boys and Girls Club of Anaheim, Anaheim Interfaith Shelter, Hotline Help Center and Anaheim Family YMCA.
The board also proposed another $25,000 for the Anaheim Museum, bringing its total to $27,000.
City Manager James D. Ruth is recommending the funding increase. In his report to the council, Ruth said revenue from sales taxes and hotel bed taxes is expected to rise and “will be more than adequate to fund this request.”
At its June 17 meeting, the council directed Ruth to review potential sources of revenue to increase funding for nonprofit groups and the museum.
The council will meet at 5 p.m. in its chambers at 200 S. Anaheim Blvd.
