Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-August on a new seabird research facility at Ft. MacArthur in San Pedro, officials said Wednesday.
The Marine Bird Care Center will be operated by the Los Angeles Unified School District, and the district’s board approved a final environmental impact report on the project this week. It is being funded by the Department of Fish and Game and other sources.
The new center will also be an emergency shelter for marine birds injured by oil spills. It will be on an acre of the district’s 47-acre Ft. MacArthur educational complex.
Another facility in the complex, the Marine Mammal Care Center, currently provides emergency care for lost seals, sea lions and other pinnipeds.
