Simi Valley Stuck in the Paint

The new rule for lane violations on free throws cost Simi Valley High in a first-round girls’ basketball game against Canyon in the Santa Clarita Summer Shootout on Wednesday night at College of the Canyons.

The Pioneers committed six lane violations, had three free throws nullified and the Cowboys added a point because of another lane violation in their 32-30 victory.

Canyon broke a 15-15 halftime tie with a 7-0 run to begin the second half.

Junior Janette Garcia had nine points and six rebounds for Canyon.

Junior forward Molly Little had nine points for Simi Valley and junior point guard Jamie Sturdivant contributed eight points and five rebounds.

A rule recently enacted prohibits players from stepping into the lane on a free-throw attempt before the ball strikes the rim.

Paraclete 40, Bell-Jeff 36--Jackie Kolsan sank four three-point baskets in a 19-point performance and Christen Lambert added 12 points for the Spirits.

Stacy Cobb scored 18 points for the Guards, Laura Lunsford added 12 and Cindy Contero had six but no other Bell-Jeff player scored.

North Hollywood 44, Valencia 32--Junior forward Markia Derby scored 16 points and Tashean Thomas had 11 for the Huskies.

Kesha Kelso scored 10 points for the Vikings.

Quartz Hill 42, Saugus 40--Kim Moore of Quartz Hill sank two free throws with 15 seconds to play.

After trailing, 30-21, with 13:35 left, the Centurions rallied to tie the score, 40-40, with 55 seconds left on a layup by Lexi Phelps.

Nicole Williford scored 14 points for Quartz Hill. Sara Sarhangian had 12 points for Saugus.

LEGION BASEBALL

Central Valley 6, Panorama City 4--Mike Schultz (6-0) struck out five and pitched an eight-hitter at Alemany High.

Jason Woolman of Central Valley had a two-run home run and a bases-loaded walk.

Justin Savitt had a single and a double, and drove in two runs for Central Valley (16-5).

Woodland Hills West 10, Valley South 0--Mike Conn had two hits and two RBIs and struck out three in four innings to earn the victory in a District 20 game at El Camino Real High.

Brian Somoza was three for three and drove in a run for Woodland Hills West (19-5).

Sun Valley 8, North Hollywood East 5--Matt Berkson had a home run and a double for North Hollywood East at Franklin Field.

Encino 10, Studio City South 0--Kris Palomares pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts, and Mike Jackson had two doubles for Encino at Valley College.
