Griffith Named to Fight Ruelas
Rafael Ruelas of Sylmar will fight Mike Griffith of Ohio (16-4) in a 10-round lightweight bout July 19 at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio. Ruelas (48-3, 38 knockouts) has not fought since January and is recovering from a hand injury.
At a loss: Junior middleweight P.J. Goossen of North Hollywood suffered his first professional loss in a 10-round split decision to Eddie Hall on Saturday at Moline, Ill.
Goossen (18-1), former International Boxing Organization champion, seemed in command but suffered back spasms in the middle rounds, according to Pat Goossen, his father and trainer.
“It was kind of a wake-up call for him,” Pat Goossen said.
It was Goossen’s first fight since signing a promotional contract three weeks ago with America Presents and promoter Dan Goossen, Pat’s brother.
Take five: Fernando Vargas (4-0) of Oxnard will fight Eugene Lopez in a six-round bout Saturday at Caesars Tahoe in Stateline, Nev., on the undercard of the WBC heavyweight title fight between Lennox Lewis and Henry Akinwande.
