Canseco Has His Eyes Examined
Jose Canseco, who tied a major league record by striking out eight times in his last two games, was scratched from the Oakland lineup Thursday to have an eye examination.
The designated hitter struck out in all five of his at-bats Wednesday night in an 11-3 victory over Kansas City, tying a club record. Canseco, who has 104 strikeouts in 337 at-bats this season, struck out three times Monday and did not play Tuesday.

Cecil Fielder of the Yankees underwent surgery to repair his broken right thumb and will be sidelined from six to eight weeks. Fielder was injured while sliding head-first at home plate in the third inning of Tuesday’s 12-6 victory against Cleveland. . . . Toronto put right-hander Juan Guzman on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained muscle in the back of his right shoulder.
