Giants Go to the Minors for Help

Right-hander William VanLandingham and infielder Rich Aurilia were recalled from triple-A Phoenix on Saturday by the San Francisco Giants.

VanLandingham was scheduled to start against Pittsburgh today in the second game of a doubleheader.

To make room for them on the 25-man roster, the Giants optioned pitchers Doug Creek and Dan Carlson to Phoenix.

The moves were made after the Giants’ 10-3 loss to Pittsburgh. Creek started and took the loss.

A boy sitting in the stands at 3Com Park was struck in the head by a foul ball.

The boy, whose name wasn’t immediately released, was taken out of the stands on a stretcher and taken to San Francisco General Hospital. He remained conscious but was to be kept overnight for observation, according to Giant spokesman Blake Rhodes.

Pittsburgh Pirate catcher Jason Kendall signed a four-year, $7.2-million contract extension with the team.

The contract commits Kendall, who is making $235,000 this season, to play for the Pirates through 2001.

The Colorado Rockies put right-hander Mike DeJean on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 18 because of a sore right elbow and called up infielder Jason Bates from Colorado Springs.
