Brea Olinda Wins in Final Minute
Eric Albrecht’s two-yard touchdown run with one minute left in the game capped an 84-yard drive and propelled Brea Olinda to a 17-14 Orange League victory over host Western Friday night.
The victory also gave the Wildcats (7-1, 3-0 in league) sole possession of first place in the league.
Brea Olinda, held in check by a stubborn Western defense and 130 yards in penalties, appeared to have excellent field position with less than five minutes to play when Deonta Birdsong returned a punt to the Western 45. But the play was called back to the Wildcat 16 because of a holding penalty.
Two plays later, Travis Blood hit Rasuli Webster with a 32-yard pass to move the Wildcats to the Western 46.
A 15-yard run by Scott Lieng was reduced to a four-yard gain by another holding penalty, but a pass interference penalty against Western kept the drive alive.
A 14-yard run by Webster and a 21-yard pass from Blood to Ron Benigno helped move the Wildcats to the six. A pass interference penalty in the end zone and two runs by Albrecht produced the winning score.
“You would definitely call that winning ugly,” said Brea Coach Jon Looney. “Western played an excellent game until that last drive.”
Trevell Jackson scored on a three-yard run to give Western (3-5, 1-2) a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Brea tied the game with 33 seconds left in the first half on Albrecht’s one-yard scoring run.
Western regained the lead on a 42-yard touchdown pass play from Jason Baughman to Cesar Valdivia. Scott Davis, who missed a 58-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the first half, hit a 32-yarder with 44 seconds left in the third quarter to reduce the Western lead, 14-10.
