2. PENN STATE (7-0) BEAT NORTHWESTERN, 30-27.

Curtis Enis ran for 153 yards and a touchdown but the Nittany Lions allowed two late scores in a too-close-for-comfort victory that stretched the longest active Division I-A win streak to 12. Next: Michigan.

3. FLORIDA ST. (8-0) BEAT N. CAROLINA ST., 48-35.

Thad Busby threw for five touchdowns and a career-best 463 yards to offset five touchdown catches by the Wolfpack’s Torry Holt. The Seminoles had 517 total yards and allowed 448 and 28 first downs. Next: at North Carolina.

4. MICHIGAN (8-0) BEAT MINNESOTA, 24-3.

Multi-talented Charles Woodson scored on a 33-yard reverse play and the Wolverine defense, which has not allowed a touchdown in the second half, held the Golden Gophers to 102 total yards. Next: at Penn State.

5. N. CAROLINA (8-0) BEAT GEORGIA TECH, 16-13.

Jonathon Linton became the first Tar Heel player to have 100 yards rushing and receiving in a game while Oscar Davenport completed 26 of 41 passes for 360 yards in the Thursday night game. Next: Florida State.

6. FLORIDA (6-2) LOST TO GEORGIA, 37-17.

Gator Coach Steve Spurrier was denied his 100th victory and had to watch the Bulldogs score their most points in this series since 1982, when Herschel Walker led them to a 44-0 victory. Next: Vanderbilt.

7. WASHINGTON (7-1) BEAT USC, 27-0

Quarterback Brock Huard and leading rusher Rashaan Shehee suffered ankle injuries and did not play the second half but the Husky defense was in control as the Trojans were shut out for the first time since 1990. Next: Oregon.

8. TENNESSEE (6-1) BEAT SOUTH CAROLINA, 22-7.

Peyton Manning had his worst game in three years, completing just eight of 25 passes for 126 yards, but the Volunteers got 205 yards and two touchdowns rushing from freshman Jamal Lewis. Next: Southern Mississippi.

9. OHIO STATE (8-1) BEAT MICHIGAN STATE, 37-13.

Gary Berry returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown and picked up a blocked punt and returned it from a yard out for another score to help keep the Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl picture. Next: at Minnesota.

10. WASHINGTON ST. (7-1) LOST TO ARIZ. ST., 44-31.

The Cougars rallied from a 24-0 second-quarter deficit, but their dreams of a perfect season ended when the Sun Devils converted two fumble recoveries into touchdowns in the final 2 minutes 55 seconds. Next: SW Louisiana.

11. AUBURN (7-2) LOST TO MISSISSIPPI STATE, 20-0.

The Bulldogs constantly changed their defensive scheme to harass Tiger quarterback Dameyune Craig, who had four interceptions--including one that Anthony Derricks returned 90 yards for a touchdown. Next: at Georgia, Nov. 15.

12. UCLA (7-2) BEAT STANFORD, 27-7.

Skip Hicks ran for three touchdowns to tie his school record of 20 in a season and the Bruins forced four turnovers and had six sacks in winning their seventhconsecutive game.Next: Washington, Nov. 15.

13. KANSAS STATE (7-1) BEAT TEXAS TECH, 13-2.

The Wildcats drove past midfield only once but held the Red Raiders to 117 total yards and six first downs. Jonathan Beasley’s 33-yard run with 3:05 left gave Kansas State some breathing room. Next: Kansas.

14. GEORGIA (7-1) BEAT FLORIDA, 37-17.

Robert Edwards tied a school record with four touchdowns as the Bulldogs defeated the Gators for the first time in eight years. Edwards’ 37-yard touchdown run with 5:58 left put the game away. Next: Auburn, Nov. 15.

15. IOWA (6-2) BEAT PURDUE, 35-17.

Reserve running back Rob Thein caught two touchdown passes and ran for another score, while starting tailback Tavian Banks ran for 126 yards and a touchdown for the Hawkeyes, who have won two in a row. Next: at Wisconsin.

16. LSU (6-2) BEAT KENTUCKY, 63-28.

Kevin Faulk rushed 28 times for 212 yards and a school-record five touchdowns as the Tigers overcame the passing of the Wildcats’ Tim Couch, who completed 41 of 66 for 410 yards and four touchdowns. Next: at Alabama.

17. WEST VIRGINIA (6-2) LOST TO SYRACUSE, 40-10.

The Mountaineers’ Amos Zereoue, the nation’s No. 4 rusher at 149.9 yards a game, managed only 71 yards in 16 carries, with 48 coming on two plays. West Virginia is 11-0 when Zereoue runs for 100 yards or more. Next: Temple, Nov. 15.

18. PURDUE (6-2) LOST TO IOWA, 35-17.

The Boilermakers’ winning streak came to an end at six games as Billy Dicken, the Big Ten’s leading passer, was just 14 of 35 for 269 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. Next: Michigan State.

19. OKLA. ST. (6-2) LOST TO TEXAS A&M;, 28-25 (OT).

The Cowboys lost their second consecutive game in overtime and are in a three-way tie for first place the Big 12’s South Division. Tim Sydnes missed a 62-yard field-goal attempt as time ran out in regulation. Next: at Oklahoma.

20. ARIZONA ST. (6-2) BEAT WASH. ST., 44-31

The Sun Devils blew a 24-0 lead, but pulled out the victory when Hamilton Mee scored on a 66-yard fumble return and Derrick Ford recovered another fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Next: at California.

21. MICHIGAN ST. (5-3) LOST TO OHIO ST., 37-13.

The Spartans, who had six turnovers in a 23-7 loss to Michigan last week, had two passes intercepted and a punt blocked--all resulting in Buckeye touchdowns. Michigan State has lost three in a row. Next: at Purdue.

22. TOLEDO (8-0) BEAT MIAMI OF OHIO, 35-28.

Chris Wallace threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns, including an 11-yarder to Brock Kreitzburg with 24 seconds left for the Rockets, who also batted away a long pass in the end zone on the game’s last play. Next: at Ball State.

23. VIRGINIA TECH (6-2) BEAT ALA. BIRM., 37-0.

Lamont Pegues rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown and Shayne Graham kicked three field goals while the Hokie defense had eight sacks and set a school record by allowing just 65 total yards. Next: Miami.

24. SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI (6-2) BEAT CINCINNATI, 24-17

Lee Roberts threw two touchdown passes to Sherrod Gideon, the last coming with 5:55 left, to rally the Golden Eagles, who also intercepted a pass in the end zone as time ran out for their first win at Cincinnati in five trips. Next: at Tennessee.

25. TEXAS A&M; (6-2) BEAT OKLA. ST., 28-25 (OT).

The Aggies trailed, 22-7, early in the fourth quarter but rallied to tie the game on the passing of Branndon Stewart and then won it in overtime on D’Andre Hardeman’s six-yard touchdown run. Next: vs. Baylor.
