St. Francis and Brown Accomplish Mission

Share

St. Francis High rode the running of tailback Darius Brown to a 14-0 victory over Chaminade and a share of the Mission League championship Thursday night at St. Francis.

On a muddy field, Brown carried 33 times for 178 yards and a touchdown, lifting the Golden Knights (7-3, 4-1 in league play) past the Eagles (3-7, 2-3).

St. Francis probably will share the league crown with Notre Dame and Serra. Both teams are 3-1 in league play and are prohibitive favorites to win tonight, Notre Dame against Harvard-Westlake and Serra against Bishop Montgomery.

In the event of a three-way tie, a series of coin flips held this morning at Crespi High will determine the Mission League’s playoff seedings.

The Golden Knights drove inside the Chaminade 20 on their first two possessions but missed a field goal attempt and had a pass intercepted, leading to a scoreless first half.

On its first possession after halftime, St. Francis drove 65 yards in eight plays and 4:13, scoring on a nine-yard run by Brown. Kjell Nesen added the first of his two extra points.

After forcing a punt, St. Francis scored its second touchdown on a one-yard run by Murice Law. That capped a 73-yard, 15-play drive on which Brown carried nine times for 56 yards.
