Stefan Lorant; Photographer, Author Profiled U.S. Leaders

Stefan Lorant, 96, photographer, filmmaker and author who profiled American presidents. Born in Hungary, Lorant was a leading cameraman in Europe, making 14 films in Vienna and Berlin, starting with “The Life of Mozart.” He was imprisoned by Hitler in 1933 for writing editorials in a Berlin weekly criticizing Nazi politics. After Hungarian journalists got him released a year later, Lorant moved to England, where he published his first book, “I Was Hitler’s Prisoner.” In 1940, he immigrated to the United States and gained new fame for his pictorial biographies of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
