Sanders’ Late Free Throws Help Fullerton Hang On to 92-87 Victory

Ben Sanders made two free throws with seven seconds remaining to lead Fullerton over Pasadena City, 92-87, in the Fullerton College basketball tournament Wednesday night.

Fullerton (2-1) led, 47-41, at the half, but Pasadena cut the lead to one, 84-83, before Sanders’ free throws clinched the victory.

Sanders led Fullerton with 23 points, six assists and five steals. Teammate Erick Ashe added 20 points and Ernie Burries had 17 points and eight rebounds.

Pasadena’s Terrell Towns led all scorers with 31 points in 30 minutes.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Orange Coast 79, San Diego Mesa 62--Shaun Jackson hit seven of 13 shots from the field, including two of three three-pointers, to lead Orange Coast (2-0).

Orange Coast, which led by 20 at the half, 48-28, shot 54% from the three-point line, making seven of 18. Chris Lopez made three of five three-pointers, finishing with 13 points. Chris Candlish added 14 points and led the Pirates in rebounding with 11.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Cypress 89, Mt. San Jacinto 53--Nancy Love scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Cypress in its season opener.

The Chargers (1-0) led, 52-23, at the half, hitting 20 of 48 from the field. Mary Perry added 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Teammates Rachel Kavan and Stephanie Durrett each had 13 points.

Orange Coast 70, Mt. San Antonio 42--Jennifer Ludwicki scored 19 points and had six rebounds to lead Orange Coast (3-1). The Pirates, who led at halftime, 37-14, shot 48% from the field.

Natalie Weeks added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Orange Coast and Adria Sortino had 11 points. Mt. San Antonio (1-2) was led by Nancy Sicairos with 13 points.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Fullerton 0--Golden West, ranked No. 1 in the state, remains tied with Saddleback in conference play. The Rustlers defeated Fullerton, 15-1, 15-4, 15-4.
