A man who was smoking in bed caused a fire at his Thousand Oaks home Friday morning, resulting in injury to himself and his wife and damage estimated at $40,000, authorities said.

The Ventura County Fire Department received a report of a fire at 6:58 a.m. on the 2800 block of Appalachian Court. Firefighters extinguished the flames by 7:13, fire officials said. No other houses were damaged.

Robert Madariaga, 57, and his wife, Arlene, 55, both suffered minor burns as well as smoke inhalation. They were taken to Columbia Los Robles Hospital for treatment and released shortly afterward. Their 27-year-old son, also in the house when the fire broke out, was not injured.
