Fast Starts Not New to Horry

Share

A 10-0 start?

Been there, done that.

Actually, been there, done better.

The best beginning to a season in Laker history isn’t even the best beginning in Robert Horry history. He was part of the 1993-94 Houston Rocket team that opened 15-0 to tie the 1948-49 Washington Capitals for the greatest start in NBA history.

“The atmosphere feels the same,” said Horry, expected to return to action tonight after sitting out two games because of a strained hamstring. “Everyone is walking around looking happy and going good. Everybody is shooting well.

“It’s the same thing when I was in Houston. We’ve got that attitude. That attitude that nobody can beat us now. Even when we’re down in the fourth quarter and we know we’re coming back.”

If the Lakers beat the Clippers tonight at the Forum, they will tie for the sixth-best start in NBA history. It would also tie the sixth-best winning streak in their Los Angeles era, though there’s no reason to even ponder reaching No. 1. That, of course, is the league record of 33 in the 1971-72 season.

The Lakers’ 10 victories have been by an average of 15.7 points. The next highest average margin, before weekend play, belonged to the New York Knicks, at 9.5 points.

Don’t even get them started about defending the home court. The five victories at the Forum have come by 21.6 points.
