Crime Diversion Program to Expand

Share

A nationally recognized crime diversion program for youth in Orange County will expand into Fullerton in November.

SHORTSTOP helps youths and their parents understand decision-making techniques, legal rights and the consequences of criminal behavior. Organizers claim that since the program began in the early 1980s, 92% of its graduates have remained law-abiding.

Youths of ages 10 through 17 who have been referred by probation officers, police, school or parents are eligible to participate in the program, which will be based at Municipal Court. Organizers hope to assist about 150 families a year.

Thanks to an award from the Orange County Community Foundation and other benefactors, the program will receive over $19,000 for the Fullerton venture, which will begin on Nov. 3.
