Backup Goalie Saves La Canada

La Canada High, playing without All-Southern Section goalie Russell Bernstein, defeated La Serna, 17-13, on Tuesday night in a battle of Southern Section Division III water polo powers at La Canada.

Jon Harmon, filling in for Bernstein, who has bronchitis, had 16 saves for the Spartans, ranked third in Division III.

La Serna, ranked fourth, pulled to within 11-10 midway through the third quarter, but La Canada responded with five consecutive goals.

Brendan Naeve led the Spartans (14-2) with six goals.

In other water polo games:

Buena 6, Oxnard 5--Matt Amendt scored his fourth goal of the game with 38 seconds left for the Bulldogs (7-4, 1-0) in a Channel League game at Oxnard.

Goalie Grant Ensminger had 14 saves and allowed just one goal in the second half for Buena, which trailed, 3-0, after one quarter and, 5-3, after three quarters.

Notre Dame 28, Culver City 11--The Knights (11-2) took a 5-0 lead five minutes into the game at Notre Dame.

Joel Everman and Peter Trapani each had six goals for the Knights.

Burroughs 14, Glendale 10--Ryan Rittmiller and Loran Leidinger each scored five goals for the Indians (7-5) in a nonleague game at Glendale.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Granada Hills 7, El Camino Real 0--Freshman Jasmin Dao won her No. 1 singles match, 8-3, for the Highlanders (3-1, 1-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at El Camino Real.

Taft 4, San Fernando 3--Liat Artzi and Johnna Hamilton won their set at No. 2 doubles for the Toreadors (3-1, 1-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Taft.

Van Nuys 7, Grant 0--Diana Friedland did not lose a game playing No. 1 singles for the Wolves (3-1, 1-0), defeating Sona Ovsenyan, 8-0, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Van Nuys.

Birmingham 4, Reseda 3--Thao Nguyen defeated Thien Nguyen, 8-0, at No. 1 singles for the host Braves (2-1, 1-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

Chatsworth 5, Cleveland 2--Jamie Macias beat My Thy Huynh, 8-0, at No. 1 singles for the Chancellors (2-2, 1-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Chatsworth.

Monroe 5, North Hollywood 2--Suzanne Eastman and Devin Moorman defeated Kazuko Okamoto and Emily Wang, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles for the Vikings (1-3, 1-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at North Hollywood (0-3, 0-1).

Camarillo 17, Newbury Park 1--Lauren Gaona lost one game in three sets at No. 1 singles for the Scorpions (6-1, 4-0) in a Marmonte League match at Newbury Park (0-5, 0-3).

Thousand Oaks 12, Royal 6--The Lancers swept nine singles matches in a Marmonte League match at Rancho Simi Park.

Simi Valley 13, Westlake 5--Mindy Gondrez swept three sets at No. 1 singles for the Pioneers in a Marmonte League match at North Ranch Country Club.

The doubles teams of Rebecca Hunau and April Forrester, and Andrea Espinoza and Margo O’Donnell each won three sets for Simi Valley (6-1, 2-1).

Agoura 15, Channel Islands 3--Brooke Borisoff went 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Alyson Tyson went 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles for the Chargers in a Marmonte League match at Agoura.

Hart 15, Canyon 3--Freshman Jenny Munroe didn’t lose a game for the second time this season, pacing the Indians in a Foothill League opener at Canyon.

Cristina Cancio swept her three matches for the first time this season at No. 3 singles for Hart (6-0).

Harvard-Westlake 17, Bishop Montgomery 1--No. 2 singles player Lindsy Forbess did not lose a game in three sets and the Wolverines won all nine doubles sets in a Mission League match at the Studio City Tennis Center.

Burroughs 11, Burbank 7--Shaland Romero, who has a 19-2 record, did not lose a game for the third time this season for the Indians (4-3, 1-0) in a Foothill League match at Burroughs.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Highland d. Victor Valley, 15-12, 15-12, 15-5--Josie Wilson had 10 kills and the Bulldogs (5-0) handed Victor Valley its first loss in six matches at Highland.

Westlake d. Simi Valley, 15-6, 15-2, 15-8--Summer Page had 11 kills for the Pioneers (4-2, 2-2) in a Marmonte League match at Westlake.

Royal d. Thousand Oaks, 15-8, 15-7, 15-13--Sherisa Livingston had 15 kills and five blocks for the Highlanders (5-1, 3-1) in a Marmonte League match at Royal.

St. Bonaventure d. Villanova Prep, 15-9, 15-9, 12-15, 15-5--Kristen Jones had 19 kills for the Seraphs (5-0) at St. Bonaventure.

Buena d. Rio Mesa, 15-3, 15-2, 15-0--Letty Marquez had eight kills and Colleen McConville had five aces for the Bulldogs (2-3, 2-1) in a Channel League match at Rio Mesa.
