Injured Shoulder Could Keep Smith Out of Arizona Lineup

A shoulder injury might keep Arizona quarterback Keith Smith on the sideline today against San Diego State.

Smith, who played at Newbury Park High, was hurt when he was blindsided on the first play of the second half in a 40-27 loss against UCLA last Saturday.

Arizona Coach Dick Tomey said Ortege Jenkins, a redshirt freshman from Long Beach Jordan, probably will start in Smith’s place against the Aztecs.

Backing up Jenkins will be former Palmdale player Rodney Williams, a starting wide receiver for the Wildcats.

Williams started at quarterback in his senior year at Palmdale and for one game at Pierce College before he was moved to receiver.

“I always asked [Arizona offensive coordinator Homer Smith] to let me have a snap before my career was over, now I have the opportunity to get in there and get one,” Williams said.

Courtship: Coley Kyman, a Cal State Northridge men’s volleyball assistant, has assembled quite a crew of groomsmen for his wedding today in Newport Beach.

Kyman, a former Matador volleyball All-American who also played quarterback for the football team, reached back to his playing days to form the wedding party.

Best man is former Northridge volleyball player Chris McGee and groomsmen include former teammates Matt Unger and Ken Lynch and his former coach, John Price. Pepperdine men’s assistant Mark Presho also is a groomsman.

“Every guy that’s ever played volleyball is going to be there,” said McGee, who is girls’ volleyball coach at Campbell Hall High. “It’s a 6-foot-5-and-over wedding.”

The bride is Michelle Mauney, a former UCLA middle blocker.
