Richardson Proclaims Happiness

Guard Pooh Richardson, who asked to be traded last May, maintains he’s content to be with the Clippers.

Richardson, who became disenchanted after being replaced by Darrick Martin as a starter in December, was held out of a game in February after he criticized Coach Bill Fitch for not using him properly.

“I’m cool,” Richardson said. “I’m so happy it’s a shame. I’m serious. I’m here and I’m loving it.

Center Stojko Vrankovic is ready to prove that last season was a fluke.

Vrankovic, who started the first 35 games for the Minnesota Timberwolves before he was replaced by Dean Garrett, was held out of 25 of the last 40 games.

“The second half I didn’t play too much because I got sick and Dean started to play well,” Vrankovic said.

Vrankovic, traded to the Clippers for Stanley Roberts in a draft-day deal, has impressed Fitch with his work ethic during the first three days of camp.

Fitch, who clashed with Roberts over his priorities, thinks Vrankovic will be more dependable.

“I think he’s got a chance to be at every practice and contribute every day to what we’re doing,” Fitch said. “He’s got a lot to learn. He’s getting the rust off his game.”

Vrankovic, who averaged 3.4 points and 3.2 rebounds, isn’t being counted on to score. His career high is only 11 points.

“We have a lot of guys to score,” he said. “I will try to do my best on defense and block shots.”

The Clippers, who open their exhibition season against the Vancouver Grizzlies on Saturday at the Pond of Anaheim, held their first scrimmage Sunday night.

“I’m glad we’re not playing anybody but ourselves,” Fitch quipped.
