UTAH STATE FOOTBALL

* County connections: Matt Sauk of Woodbridge High and Orange Coast College is Utah State’s starting quarterback. Brad Bohn of Laguna Beach is the Aggies’ kicker, Jerry Arguello of Orange High and Santa Ana College is the punter and Mark Rommel of Villa Park High and Santa Ana College in a starting offensive tackle.

* Worth noting: Sauk was hurt in the fourth quarter of Utah State’s 42-35 loss to Brigham Young Friday night. He’s listed day to day with a sprained ankle. The opposing quarterback, BYU’s Kevin Feterik of Los Alamitos, was replaced in the fourth quarter by Paul Shoemaker, who led the Cougars’ comeback.

PEPPERDINE WATER POLO

* County connections: Jeremy Pope of Golden West College, Alan Hermann of Dana Hills, Christian Jensen and Mike Marriner of Laguna Beach and Brian McAllister of Newport Harbor are on the Waves.

* Worth noting: Pepperdine is 11-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation. Hermann had three goals Sept. 27 in an 11-4 victory over fourth-ranked UC Irvine. Pope is tied for the team lead with 25 goals and Hermann has 21, including seven in an 11-9 victory over 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.

* Villanova football: Brian Finneran of Santa Margarita became Villanova’s all-time leading receiver with eight catches for 144 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-17 victory over James Madison Saturday. Quarterback Chris Boden of San Clemente High passed for 267 yards and five touchdowns in the victory. Villanova is 4-0.
