Newport Harbor Sinks Harvard-Westlake, 9-7

A shake-up in the Southern Section Division I boys’ water polo rankings appears imminent after Friday’s games in the Southern California Invitational tournament at Irvine High.

Third-ranked Harvard-Westlake suffered its first loss, 9-7, at the hands of fifth-ranked Newport Harbor in a second-round game.

Phil Spataru scored five goals for the Wolverines (11-1) and Brendan Connolly turned away 11 shots by the Sailors (8-4).

Earlier, Spataru had five goals and Connolly had 10 saves to help the Wolverines down Carmichael Jesuit, top-ranked in the Sac-Joaquin Section, 12-5.

Harvard-Westlake will face San Clemente, ranked second in Southern Section Division I, in a consolation game today.

Royal 17, Newbury Park 2--David Radka scored six goals and Jason Perry added four for the Highlanders in a Marmonte League match at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Perry scored three of his four goals and Ryan Apperson scored all three of his goals in Royal’s eight-goal fourth quarter.

Roman Folc had five assists and Garrett Herzer had nine saves for the Highlanders (13-3, 2-0).

La Canada 10, Mira Costa 6--The Spartans (15-4) scored the last four goals at Mira Costa. Brendan Naeve and Donald Kwon each scored three goals for La Canada.

Agoura 19, Thousand Oaks 1--Mitch Dexter and Eugene Lai each scored five goals, and Elliot Hirsch had four for the Chargers (14-4, 2-0) in a Marmonte League match at Agoura.

Crescenta Valley 16, San Marino 2--Justin Payne’s five goals helped the Falcons (13-2) to a 12-0 halftime lead at San Marino.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Western State Conference Meet No. 2--Julio Serratos finished first ahead of teammate Rafael Ramos and the Vaqueros took a 35-37 victory over runner-up Moorpark at Kenneth Hahn Park in Los Angeles.

Serratos, unbeaten in six races this season, finished in 21:03 over the four-mile course and Ramos timed 21:33 for Glendale, which edged defending state champion Moorpark, 30-32, in the first WSC meet Sept. 19.

Omar Oredain ran 21:55 to finish eighth, Arbi Nazarian finished 10th in 22:06 and Ilmar Rodriguez clocked 22:36 and was 14th for the Vaqueros.

Danny Oliva was fourth in 21:44 and Uzziel Gray finished fifth in 21:51 for Moorpark.

Miguel Galindo of Ventura, runner-up in the state championships last year, placed third in 21:40 to continue his comeback from a knee injury.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Western State Conference Meet No. 2--Cheryl Ramos ran second and Kelly Sill of Glendale was third to help the Vaqueros defeat runner-up Bakersfield, 52-73, at Kenneth Hahn Park.

Ramos clocked 21:49 over the 5,000-meter course, with Sill at 22:24. Kelly Doyle placed 10th in 23:17 for Glendale, which beat Bakersfield, 43-66, in the first WSC meet.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Buena 68, Ventura 122, Rio Mesa 141, Oak Park 188, Moorpark 268--Cathy Dunne clocked 19:39 to win the sophomore race, with teammate Sarah Paine third at 20:21, and the Bulldogs won the sweepstakes title in the Dos Pueblos Invitational.

The Bulldogs were second in the freshman and junior races, and third in the senior race.

MEN’S SOCCER

Glendale 1, Moorpark 1--Arshak Abyanli’s penalty kick in the 65th minute got the Vaqueros even in a WSC match at Moorpark.

Pat Russo scored for the Raiders (6-2-2, 0-0-1) in the fourth minute.
