No. 1 San Clemente Falls to Griffins in Water Polo

David Kong and Derek Bradley each scored twice for Los Alamitos as the county’s seventh-ranked water polo team upset top-ranked San Clemente, 5-4, Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Southern California Invitational at Heritage Aquatic Complex in Irvine.

Los Alamitos (12-3) scored its final goal in the third quarter to take a two-goal lead. Goalkeeper Tom Carey (four saves) limited the Tritons to only one goal in their comeback attempt. D.J. Yeilding finished with three goals for San Clemente (7-3).

Los Alamitos will play Newport Harbor, which beat North Hollywood Harvard Westlake, 9-7, in a semifinal game at 1:40 p.m. today.

In another tournament game:

No. 2 Foothill 9, Orinda Miramonte 5--Matt McPherson scored four goals and Robby Arroyo added two to help Foothill (10-2) advance to the semifinals, where the Knights will meet Long Beach Wilson, a 16-8 winner over Coronado. Nick Ellis had 15 saves for Foothill against Miramonte.

In an earlier game Friday, McPherson and Blake Seymour each scored four goals in a 16-9 victory over Davis.

Today’s championship final is scheduled for 6:20 p.m.

In the Orange tournament:

Garden Grove 13, Canyon (JV) 5--Tommy Lane and Brandon Osborne each scored four goals in the quarterfinal victory for Garden Grove (10-2).

In nonleague water polo:

Trabuco Hills 9, No. 8 Santa Margarita 8--Ben Burton scored the winning goal with 24 seconds left to give Trabuco Hills (6-9) the upset. Burton put Trabuco Hills ahead, 8-7, in the fourth, but Santa Margarita (13-6) rallied to tie before Burton’s winning shot.

In Olympic League girls’ cross-country:

Orange Lutheran wins--Elizabeth Rogers won in 19 minutes 51 seconds over the three-mile course at Irvine Regional Park for Orange Lutheran (4-0), which defeated Cerritos Valley Christian, 22-38, and Ontario Christian, 18-45. In South Coast League girls’ volleyball:

No. 3 Mater Dei 3, Mission Viejo 0--Lindsay Pavlik had 15 kills and six blocks to help Mater Dei (9-1, 2-0) to a 15-8, 15-0, 15-1 victory.
