Northern Arizona Tops Montana State

Samaji Akili of Northern Arizona intercepted Rob Compson’s pass with 1:08 left in the game, sealing a 14-13 Big Sky Conference victory over Montana State Saturday night at Flagstaff, Ariz.

The Lumberjacks trailed, 10-0, late in the first half and didn’t take the lead until Travis Brown connected with Mike Lemos on a 34-yard pass play that set up Brown’s one-yard scoring run with 10:18 left in third quarter.

Brown completed 22 of 32 passes for 253 yards and a touchdown.

Montana State built its early lead on Geoff Groshelle’s 43-yard field goal and Compson’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Scott Harry.

Brown hit Gibbons St. Paul on a 14-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 10-7 but Groshelle kicked another 43-yard field goal to make it 13-7 at halftime.

Montana 48, Idaho State 0--Brian Ah Yat threw three touchdown passes and the Grizzlies set two school records at Pocatello, Idaho.

Ah Yat completed 18 of 27 passes for 234 yards, including three passes to Jeremy Watkins for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Kris Heppner kicked a school-record 45-yard field goal for Montana.

The Bengals lost their best opportunity to score when freshman quarterback Seth Burford fumbled at the one-yard line. Cornerback Justin Gaines of Montana recovered and ran 95 yards for a touchdown--another school record.

The Grizzlies sacked Burford four times and held Idaho State to 168 yards.

Eastern Washington 30, Cal State Sacramento 17--Rex Prescott rushed 30 times for a career-high 201 yards and a touchdown, and Mike McKenzie had 101 yards in 18 carries for the Eagles at Cheney, Wash.

Griffin Garske, starting in place of injured Harry Leons for Eastern Washington, completed 11 of 18 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

Carlos Smith of Sacramento caught six passes for 163 yards and a touchdown, but A.J. Bernhardt completed only 11 of 30 for 219 yards.

Linebacker Ryland Wickman made 22 tackles for the Hornets.

Portland State 35, St. Mary’s 21--Tyson Parsons passed for two touchdowns and Orshawante Bryant returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to break a 14-14 tie for the Vikings in a nonconference game at Portland.

Parsons completed 16 of 31 passes for 187 yards to help Portland State build a 28-14 lead through the first three quarters.

Ed Williams of Canyon High had 95 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Gaels (2-4), and Shawn Laird completed 17 of 32 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown.
