Group Revs Up Campaign on Recycling of Motor Oil

Share

At a news conference Tuesday near the pier, the American Oceans campaign announced the start of a statewide television and radio campaign to promote the recycling of motor oil.

Robert Sulnick, the group’s executive director, said that of the motor oil used statewide, only 30% is recycled. The volume of oil that is not properly disposed of is equal to five times the amount spilled by the Exxon Valdez oil tanker, he said.

One quart of motor oil contaminates 250,000 gallons of water, he said.

“Most people don’t see motor oil as the serious pollutant that it is,” he said. But “oil is indestructible; if you clean it [during recycling], it’s as good as new.”

To make these points, the group unveiled a series of public service announcements in English and Spanish.

Sulnick, an environmental lawyer, and actor Ted Danson co-founded the campaign 10 years ago to heighten environmental awareness.
