Gunman Shooting at Stray Dog Kills Woman
A woman was shot to death as she sat near a memorial to homicide victims. Witnesses said the gunman apparently was firing a pistol at a stray dog.
Norma Barrios, 33, was chatting with a co-worker at Pat Hurley Park when she was shot in the chest Tuesday. The shooter was in a parking lot but couldn’t see Barrios because the bench and memorial were obscured by a large bush, police Detective Rick Foley said.
City officials said the memorial will be dedicated Sunday. A city work crew had placed the stone Monday. It reads: “In loving memory of the innocents who are gone, but never forgotten. Let us remember them by stopping the violence.”
Police were investigating but had made no immediate arrests.
