Northridge Upsets Titans in Men’s Soccer

Federico Arroyo scored on a looping shot from about 20 yards in overtime to give visiting Cal State Northridge a 3-2 upset over Cal State Fullerton Sunday in a Mountain Sports Federation men’s soccer game.

The loss dropped Fullerton into a first-place tie with third-ranked UCLA. Fullerton was coming off a 3-1 upset of the Bruins Friday.

Kenny Simmons had scored from about 30 yards to give the Titans a 2-1 lead in the 79th minute. But Northridge (3-10-1, 2-2-1) rallied on a goal by Jon Relles with about nine minutes left in regulation.

Duncan Oughton scored Fullerton’s first goal in the 50th minute and Arroyo answered 20 minutes later for Northridge.

In another Mountain Sports Federation soccer game:

UCLA 4, UC Irvine 0--Nick Theslof scored twice and Carlos Bocanegra and Seth George had one goal each for visiting UCLA. All of the goals came in the opening 31 minutes of the first half.

In Big West Conference women’s soccer:

Cal State Fullerton 3, Utah State 0--Amy Barnes scored her first two goals of the season for host Fullerton (6-9, 2-2).

Fullerton’s first goal came about 10 minutes into the game, when Kassie Rypel controlled a rebound and kicked it in after a shot by Christina Stewart.

Barnes’ first goal came on a tap-in in the 51st minute. Then she drilled one in from about 15 yards 10 minutes later.

Marla Nelson made two saves as Fullerton got its fourth shutout. Utah State is 3-12, 0-4.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

San Diego State 3, UC Irvine 0--Catherine McGuire had two goals and Lori LaCoursiere had a goal and two assists for visiting San Diego State (8-4-1). UC Irvine is 10-7.
