City to Start New Chapter With Library Opening

Share

For about 10 years, Mission Viejo residents have been waiting for a new library. That wait is almost over.

On Saturday, the city will celebrate the grand opening of its $6.5-million, 27,650-square-foot library. Anticipation is already building.

Library workers putting the finishing touches on the gleaming, state-of-the-art building “are running on adrenaline,” said Valerie Meyer, the city’s head librarian.

Meyer said her phone is “ringing off the hook.” More than 400 people inquired about becoming library volunteers. And more than 4,000 have requested library cards.

The city celebration Saturday will include a 10 a.m. opening ceremony and a tour. Monday will be the first day residents can check out books.

Inside the library, patrons will find the latest in technology, including about 37 computer terminals--12 with Internet access. Schools, local governments and cultural groups will have access to a teleconferencing room.

“We feel that this community expects” a high level of electronic information, Meyer said. “It will be our mission to provide and hopefully stay ahead of the technology.”

On the cultural side, readers can use the Heritage Room, designed to resemble a mission-era ranchero living room. Art shows and local historical artifacts will be displayed.

In the community room, a donated $30,000 Baldwin piano will be used for recitals.

Mission Viejo youngsters will have access to the Internet at two terminals in the children’s section. A separate room will be used for storytelling.

Looking for more control of library services, Mission Viejo officials built the facility after breaking away from the county system. Mission Viejo Library is at 25209 Marguerite Parkway.
