Lost in all the hoopla over Laguna Hills’ Michael Jones setting a county career rushing record last week was Tustin running back DeShaun Foster’s pursuit of the county career scoring mark.

Foster has scored 462 points, breaking the county record of 404 set by Jeff Byrd of Rancho Alamitos in 1991-92.

A three-year, two-way starter, Foster has 60 touchdowns and rushed for 3,878 yards. He has 168 points this season, and Tustin Coach Myron Miller says he wouldn’t be surprised if Foster breaks the county single-season scoring record of 252 points set by Brendan McGraw of Laguna Hills in 1994.

Foster’s 218 points last season rank fourth on the county’s single-season scoring list. He is the Southern Section’s rushing and scoring leader at the season’s midway point.

Last Friday, during the game in which he broke the county career rushing record, Jones also set a county mark for most career rushing touchdowns.

A three-year starter, Jones has 69 rushing touchdowns. Five of those came last week in Laguna Hill’s 50-12 victory over Estancia, a game in which Jones ran for 259 yards and raised the county career rushing record to 5,539 yards.

The previous marks were 66 rushing touchdowns set by Ron Papazian of Whittier Christian (1987-89) and 5,397 yards rushing by Ray Pallares of Valencia (1983-85).

Jones has scored 426 points in his career, second to Foster among county rushers.
