Matadors Fall Short of Goals

After scoring only 10 goals in its first 14 matches, the Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team scored six Friday but lost to Northern Arizona, 7-6, in a Big Sky Conference match in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Trailing, 4-1, at halftime and 6-2 midway through the second half, the Matadors (1-14, 0-3 in conference play) scored four goals in 22 minutes to send the match into overtime.

Danielle Wile scored her first goal of the season in the 119th minute to give the Lumberjacks (3-10, 1-2) the victory. The teams played in wind-chilled temperatures near 20 degrees.

Riya Gough gave Northridge a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute and Beth Hoiby’s goal in the 55th cut the Matadors’ deficit to 4-2. The team’s late flurry included goals by Marilyn Huschka and Amy Gill and two by Jennifer Barnes, who scored with six minutes left in regulation for a 6-6 tie.

Tawni Takagi made 15 saves for Northridge and Autumn Cummins stopped 10 shots for the Lumberjacks, who broke a seven-match losing streak.

In other women’s soccer matches:

Ventura 3, Bakersfield 0--Janet Cooper scored in the 47th minute, Joy Barry in the 82nd and Barbara Almaraz in the 85th for the Pirates (16-2-1, 9-0-1) in a Western State Conference match at Bakersfield.

Glendale 1, Santa Barbara 1--Erin Cola took a pass from Sandy Rosales and scored with six minutes left to give Glendale (6-7-1, 3-6-1) a tie in a WSC match at Griffith Park.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Pepperdine 8, Long Beach State 3--Two-meter man Jeremy Pope scored two of his three goals in the third quarter and the top-ranked Waves (16-1, 4-0) pulled away from the 11th-rated 49ers (7-12, 1-5) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Pepperdine.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Agoura 10, Righetti 8--Playing together for the first time, Lauren Hahn and Alexis Bell needed two tiebreakers to sweep their sets at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-4), for the Chargers (8-7) in a nonleague match at Agoura.

Campbell Hall 12, Whitney 6--The No. 1 doubles team of Faith Scher and Maya Shammas swept its sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, for the Vikings (10-3, 4-2) in a Delphic League match at the Studio City Racquet Centre.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Burroughs 22, Burbank 5--Loran Leidinger scored 10 goals for the Indians (13-6, 2-1) in an Almont League game at Burroughs.
