Jones’ 227 Yards, 5 Scores Bury University

Senior Michael Jones scored five touchdowns--all in the first half--to lead Laguna Hills to a 49-20 Pacific Coast League victory over University Saturday night at Irvine High.

Jones, who became the all-time county leader in rushing last week, added 227 yards in 22 carries to help Laguna Hills build a 42-6 halftime lead. Jones did not play in the second half.

Laguna Hills (6-1, 2-0) scored on every possession in the first half.

University (1-5-1, 1-1) was led by quarterback Damian DeFeo, who completed seven of 16 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

Laguna Hills, ranked seventh in Orange County, went ahead on its opening drive when Jones scored from five yards with 8 minutes 8 seconds left in the first quarter, capping a nine-play, 70-yard drive.

Quarterback Tommy Banning then connected with Saia Makakaufaki on a 60-yard touchdown pass with 4:03 left in the first quarter to give the Hawks a 14-0 lead.

Jones scored on a 56-yard run with 1:02 left in the quarter for a 21-0 Laguna Hills lead.

He scored on a six-yard run with 11:20 remaining in the second quarter for a 28-0 lead. And he scored on a five-yard run with 8:36 left. A five-yard run by Jones with 3:05 remaining put Laguna Hills ahead, 42-0.

University made it 42-6, when Colin Cavanaugh scored from one yard with 11 seconds left in the first half, capping a 10-play, 65-yard drive.
