Northridge Rallies Past Irvine in Five

Cal State Northridge defeated UC Irvine, 9-15, 15-7, 15-10, 13-15, 15-13, in a nonconference women’s volleyball match Tuesday night at UC Irvine.

The Matadors (12-9) led the rally-scored fifth game, 5-1, and held on for the victory.

Nicki Midwin had 18 kills and 14 digs for the Matadors and Crystal Newquist had 11 kills, 12 blocks and 16 digs.

Amy Gillis, formerly of Saugus High, added 11 kills for the Matadors, who recovered from a slow first game with 21 kills in the second.

Larissa Carter had 22 kills and Brooke Witt added 15 for UC Irvine (6-17).

In other women’s volleyball matches:

Cal Lutheran d. Occidental, 15-12, 15-5, 15-4--Kelly Mongini had nine kills for the Regals in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Occidental.

Former Santa Clara High player Marianne Moll also had nine kills for Cal Lutheran (7-9, 7-3), which had nine team blocks.

Occidental (4-12, 1-8) had 11 service errors and only one block.

Moorpark d. Ventura, 8-15, 13-15, 15-10, 15-12, 15-13--Jolene Small had 20 kills while Michelle Capuano and Carrie Swartz each had 17 kills for the Raiders (11-1, 8-0, 2-0) in a Western State Conference Northern Division match. Moorpark has won all six of its matches that have gone five games.

Canyons d. Glendale, 15-4, 15-4, 15-3--Andrea Koman, a former Canyon High player, had eight kills for the Cougars (4-5, 2-1) in a WSC match at Canyons.

Edit Khachataryan had four kills for Glendale (0-8, 0-3).

MEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 16, Fullerton 4--Kyle Gilpin and Joey Bennett each scored four goals and Jon Conrad added three for the Monarchs (18-7) in a nonconference match at Valley.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Ventura 13, Oxnard 0--Krista Janik scored three goals for the Pirates (17-2-1, 10-0-1) in a WSC game at Ventura.

MEN’S SOCCER

Glendale 5, Oxnard 2--Mike Wyly scored twice for the Vaqueros (11-3-1, 3-1-1) in a WSC match at Oxnard.
