El Modena Earns a Share of First

El Modena edged Foothill in three games, 15-10, 16-14, 16-14, Tuesday to move into a first-place tie with the Knights in Century League girls’ volleyball. Both teams are 5-1 in league and each has a victory over the other.

Foothill (10-3) won the earlier matchup this season, 7-15, 7-15, 15-13, 15-4, 15-12.

Courtney Heil had 15 kills to lead El Modena (13-1), ranked seventh in Division III-AA.

Danielle Bauer had 16 kills for host Foothill. Teammate Rebekah Cole had 27 assists.

In another Century League match:

Villa Park 3, Orange 0--Tiffany Wood had 16 kills and Julie Blume contributed seven for Villa Park (10-3, 5-2), which won, 15-7, 18-16, 15-3.

In the Empire League:

No. 8 Cypress 3, Kennedy 0--Dusty Creager led the Centurions with 13 blocks and four blocks. Setter Laura Woiemberghe had 31 assists and three kills in the 15-10, 15-13, 15-10 victory. Ciri Wright led the Knights with 13 kills.

In Freeway League girls’ volleyball:

La Habra 3, Sunny Hills 2--La Habra’s Kirsten Berg spiked an overpass for the final point, which gave the Highlanders a 5-15, 15-12, 15-12, 12-15, 17-15 victory and sole possession of first place.

Sunny Hills (7-4, 5-2) had a 14-13 advantage in the final game before La Habra rallied. Berg and Colleen Dominguez had 17 kills to lead the Highlanders (8-3, 6-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 3, Laguna Hills 1--Camille Robles led University (9-4, 5-2) to a 15-10, 7-15, 15-3, 15-10 victory over Laguna Hills (9-4, 4-3) with 10 kills.

In the South Coast League:

No. 1 Mater Dei 3, Mission Viejo 0--Amy DeCinces had 14 kills in a victory for Mater Dei (14-1, 7-0), 15-0, 15-4, 15-6.

Dana Hills 3, No. 9 Capistrano Valley 0--Jami Bari had 20 kills to help Dana Hills in the upset. The Dolphins (2-8, 2-4) won, 15-8, 15-12, 15-8. Capistrano Valley is 8-5, 3-4.

In the Sea View League:

No. 4 Newport Harbor 3, El Toro 0--Monica Bridle had eight kills in three sets, 18-16, 15-7, 15-0, for Newport Harbor (13-2, 7-0). Heidi Jackson had eight kills for El Toro (3-10, 1-6).

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 6 Laguna Beach 3, Aliso Niguel 0--Cammie DeGeus had nine kills and Kate Dwyer had 24 assists for an injury-depleted Laguna Beach (11-3, 7-0).

In the Sunset League:

No. 2 Fountain Valley 3, Los Alamitos 0--Natalie Snowden had 15 kills and Melissa Plass had 30 assists for Fountain Valley, which won, 15-5, 15-8, 15-6. Fountain Valley improves to 11-2, 6-1.

No. 5 Marina 3, Huntington Beach 0--Katie Phillips and Lindsay Keating led the Vikings (10-2, 6-1) to a 15-9, 15-9, 15-11 sweep over the Oilers. Lauren Wilson led Huntington Beach (9-5, 3-4) with 10 kills.

In nonleague boys’ water polo:

Edison 12, Long Beach Millikan 7--Kyle Tague, Cooper Brisoe and Taylor Jones scored two goals each in the fourth quarter as Edison outscored Millikan, 6-1. Tague finished with five goals and Jones has six steals for the Chargers (14-9).

Estancia 11, Saddleback 6--Brad Wayman had five goals and John Semften added three for Estancia (16-7, 1-2). Bryan DeWilde recorded 10 saves for the Eagles. Saddleback is 6-12.

University 15, Garden Grove 11--University had to struggle for this win as Ryan Swanson led the Trojans with five goals. At the end of the second quarter, the score was tied, 8-8. Matt Oliver had 13 saves for Foothill, which improved to 12-8.
