Santa Ana Wins Golden West League Cross-Country Titles

Santa Ana boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams won the Golden West League championships Thursday at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

The top-ranked Saints boys, who finished undefeated in league at 5-0, had 27 points. Tustin (4-1) was second with 46 points and Saddleback (57) took third.

Tustin’s C.J. Morales won the race in 15 minutes 29 seconds. Alfonso Leon of Santa Ana took second (15:43). Leo Gordillo of Tustin finished third (15:52), but Saints’ Juan Salgado (15:59) and George Pena (16:05) finished fourth and fifth to secure the victory.

Servite finished fourth with 115 points, followed by Westminster (147) and Ocean View (164).

In the girls’ championships, Brenda Nava finished second and Neomi Fuentez was third to lead Santa Ana to the title.

Julieta Moran of Saddleback finished first in 19:26, 12 seconds faster than Nava on the three-mile course.

Santa Ana finished with 35 points and Saddleback beat out Tustin for second place. Both Saddleback and Tustin tied with 53, but Saddleback won because of the higher finish of its sixth runner. Rosary (81) finished fourth, Ocean View (157) fifth and Westminster (165) sixth.

In the Garden Grove League boys’ cross-country:

Santiago wins--Bob Kennedy, Rene Rangel, Antonio Baez and Oscar Jardon finished tied for first in 16:21 for Santiago (6-0), which beat Pacifica (15-50) and Rancho Alamitos (17-45) at Mile Square Park.

In the Sea View League:

No. 6 Newport Harbor sweeps--Newport Harbor (5-0) had four finishers in the top five to win the double-dual meet. The Sailors’ Curt Herberts finished second in 15:56 over three miles at Woodbridge. El Toro’s Danny Lee won in 15:47.

In Orange League girls’ cross-country:

No. 9 Brea Olinda 15, Savanna 50--Sisters Jenny and Michelle Thune of Brea Olinda, teamed with Stephanie Jones, all beat the school course record, which was set this season by teammate April Matulich at 20:54. Jenny Thune, a freshman, won in 20:25. Her older sister, Michelle, was three seconds behind her. Jones’ time was 20:53. Brea Olinda is 6-1, 5-0.

In the Sea View League:

No. 6 Newport Harbor girls get narrow victory--Alicia McFall finished first in 17:47 as Newport Harbor (2-3) edged Woodbridge, 28-29. Woodbridge’s Mary Moore finished second with a time of 18:15 miles on her home course as the Warriors defeated El Toro, 27-28.

Newport Harbor also defeated El Toro (2-3), 26-30.

In the South Coast League:

No. 5 Mission Viejo wins-- Kendal Billingsley won the event in 18:38. The Diablos beat Trabuco Hills, 17-39 and San Clemente, 20-36.

In Golden West League girls’ tennis:

Rosary 10, Tustin 8--Rosary (14-4, 9-0) clinched its fourth consecutive league title and extended its league unbeaten streak to 39. Tustin is 13-4, 7-2,

In the South Coast League:

No. 2 Dana Hills 14, No. 6 Mater Dei 4--Summer Tantee defeated Mater Dei’s Melissa Esmero, 6-4. It was Esmero’s first league loss in two years.

In Orange League girls’ volleyball:

Valencia 3, Western 0--Valencia, ranked third in Division II-A, clinched its ninth consecutive league title with a 15-5, 15-4, 15-7 victory.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 6 Laguna Beach 3, Laguna Hills 0--Lynne Brinkman had 16 kills for Laguna Beach (11-3, 8-0), which won, 15-12, 15-10, 15-12, to clinch a share of the league title.

In the Sea View League:

No. 4 Newport Harbor 3, Irvine 1--April Ross had 15 kills for Newport Harbor (14-2, 8-0) in its 15-11, 15-6, 13-15, 15-4 victory over Irvine (5-9, 2-6).
