Blaze Started by Campfire Burns 1,100 Acres in Riverside County
A brush fire in southwestern Riverside County burned about 1,100 acres Sunday, forcing residents to evacuate dozens of ranches scattered throughout the area, authorities said.
Sparked by a campfire, the blaze began about 11:20 a.m. near Rancho California, an unincorporated area of Riverside County east of Temecula, and headed east, officials said.
About 50 homes in a six-square-mile area were evacuated, although most appeared to be safe because residents had cleared away surrounding brush. “They did just like they were supposed to,” said Iral Evans, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry.
As of late Sunday night, no injuries had been reported. Officials had no estimate for containment or control of the fire.
