Duke Athletic Director Tom Butters, 59, announced he will retire before the end of the school year. Butters had quadruple bypass surgery in June and after that said he would retire by 2000. But his timetable changed after he returned to work in August. “I was introduced to my own mortality,” he said.

Miami senior wide receiver Jammi German, declared ineligible last month by the school for ethical conduct violations, had a petition for reinstatement rejected by the NCAA. The university said it would not appeal, meaning German’s college career is probably over. . . . Florida defensive tackle Reggie McGrew will be out at least a month because of a tear in the medial collateral ligament of his right knee, an injury suffered Saturday night against Southern Mississippi. . . . Central Michigan tailback Silas Massey, who rushed for 1,544 yards and 17 touchdowns last year, was declared out for the season because of a knee injury suffered in practice last month. Central Michigan plays at Florida on Saturday.
